Spokane Chiefs even WHL championship series with Medicine Hat

After being held to one goal in the WHL championship series opening game, the Spokane Chiefs pounced on the Medicine Hat Tigers in game two on Sunday.

Spokane scored four goals in the first period, building enough of a cushion on the scoreboard to hold off the Tigers and even the series at a game apiece.

With the fans still making their way to their seats, Medicine Hat found the back of the net in the opening minute to send the home crowd into a frenzy.

To make things even more special, the goal was Cayden Lindstrom’s first score of the season after being out all year because of an injury.

The Tigers’ lead was short-lived before the Chiefs’ trio of Andrew Cristall, Shea Van Olm and Berkly Catton joined forces to even the game at the 6:50 mark of the first period.

A few minutes later, Rasmus Ekström put the Chiefs ahead and they never looked back, adding two more goals in two minutes.

Medicine Hat made it a 4-2 game in the second period, but it was not enough as Spokane added two goals in the third period to solidify the 6-1 win.

Six players from the Chiefs managed to post multi-point nights while Dawson Cowan stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced in net for Spokane.

The series will now shift to Spokane for a trio of games, with matches set to take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

If a champion is not crowned in Spokane, the series will return to Alberta for game six next Sunday and a winner-take-all game seven on May 19.
