Three Canadians remain in the US Open and they have a tough path ahead of themselves with matches scheduled against some of the best players in the world.
The first Canadian back in action is Leylah Annie Fernandez, who is in the third round of the US Open for the first time since 2021 and facing Aryna Sabalenka tonight.
Fernandez is coming off a comeback win that saw her defeat Elsa Jacquemot in three sets on Wednesday.
After losing the first set 2-6, Fernandez bounced back with a 6-3 second set win and a 6-2 third set win.
The Canadian will now take on the top-ranked women’s singles player on the planet, who also happens to be the defending 2024 US Open champion.
Fernandez and Sabalenka have faced each other on one other occasion. Back in 2021, the Canadian defeated the Belarusian in the semifinals of the US Open.
Also back in the third round of the US Open for the first time since 2021 is Félix Auger-Aliassime, who will be taking on the third-ranked Alexander Zverev.
While Auger-Aliassime has a 2-6 record against Zverev, the pair have only played each other on one occasion in a grand slam event.
The Canadian managed a five-set win against the German at Wimbledon in 2021.
The third and final Canadian left in the US Open field is Denis Shapovalov, who defeated Valentin Royer to book his spot in the third round.
With the win, Shapovalov signed up for a date with the world's top men’s singles player, Jannik Sinner, on Saturday.
Sinner is the defending US Open champion and has faced Shapovalov on one other occasion, which saw Shapovalov win their meeting at the 2021 Australian Open.
Shapovalov and Auger-Aliassime’s match times on Saturday are to be determined, while Fernandez is set to compete at 4 pm on Friday.
