Several communities in northern and coastal British Columbia set new daily low-temperature records on Saturday as temperatures fell below seasonal norms.
Environment Canada says four areas set daily minimum temperature records on May 31.
Burns Lake recorded the coldest mark, with a preliminary new low of -5.1ºC at the Burns Lake Decker Lake station. The previous record was -4.7ºC, set in 2023, and records in the area have been kept since 1949.
Smithers also set a preliminary record, falling to -2.1ºC at the Smithers Airport Auto station.
The previous record was -1.1ºC, set in 1976, with records dating back to 1938.
Terrace dropped to -0.9ºC at the Terrace A station, breaking the previous record of 1.1ºC set in 1931. Records in the Terrace area have been kept since 1912.
Bella Bella set a preliminary record of 1.9ºC, narrowly breaking the previous mark of 2.0ºC set in 2018. Records in the area have been kept since 1977.
Environment Canada says the records are based on selected historical stations in each geographic area and may be preliminary or unofficial.
