Lytton, BC breaks Canada’s all-time record-high temperature previously set in 1937

It was an absolute scorcher throughout British Columbia over the weekend, but nothing compared to Lytton.

The small village west of Merritt, where the Fraser River and Thompson River meet, hit a staggering high of 46.6°C on Sunday.

That’s the highest temperature ever recorded anywhere in Canada.

It beat the previous record that was set more than eight decades ago.

On July 5, 1937, it hit 45.0°C in both Yellow Grass, Sask. and Midale, Sask.

While Lytton claimed the Canadian crown for a hot spot on Sunday, there was no shortage of regional temperature records broken in other cities, towns and villages across the province.

In total, 59 temperature records fell on Sunday, some by over 10 degrees, including notable spots like Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, Kamloops, Abbotsford and Squamish.

A heat warning remains in effect for most of BC and Western Canada, with daily highs forecasted to top 40°C for at least two or three more days, depending on the location.

In fact, there’s a good chance that the record set by Lytton on Sunday is broken again before this heat wave ends.
