Lytton was Canada’s hot spot at 33.5°C as more heat records broken in BC on Tuesday

A few more daily temperature records were broken in British Columbia on Tuesday.

According to Environment Canada, four BC communities reached highs never seen before in their recorded history on May 5.

That includes Lytton, as the village lived up to its famous reputation as Canada’s hot spot by being exactly that on Tuesday.

Lytton hit 33.5°C, matched by no other location in the country on the day, to break its old May 5 record of 32.3°C set in 2013.

Daily temperature records were broken in Kitimat, Sandspit and Smithers on Tuesday. Details on all four communities’ record-setting day are below:

  • Kitimat (25°C) – old record of 23°C set in 1998
  • Lytton (33.5°C) – old record of 32.3°C set in 2013
  • Sandspit (16.3°C) – old record of 15.7°C set in 1981
  • Smithers (25.8°C) – old record of 25.2°C set in 2013
