Environment and Climate Change Canada’s British Columbia division has confirmed that tornado touched down in Fort St. John on Friday, Aug. 21.
The organization received multiple reports that a tornado touched down in northern neighbourhoods of the city on that day around 7:50 pm MST.
Today, it was confirmed that it was, in fact, a tornado.
“This tornado has been given a rating of EF0 with a track 3 kilometres long and up to 80 metres wide,” said a release from ECCC BC.
“Wind speeds were estimated up to 130 km/h.”
It caused damage to homes, vehicles and other property and a remote damage survey has since been launched by the Northern Tornadoes Project in collaboration with ECCC BC.
ECCC BC meteorologists are seeking pictures of both the tornado and damage caused by it to continue the investigation into the storm.
According to the Weather Network, Canada sees 62 tornadoes a year on average, but British Columbia is the country’s least tornado-prone province on average, seeing just 0.6 per year.
