Wildfire smoke expected to impact pair of South Thompson communities

Wildfire smoke has triggered an air quality statement for areas in the South Thompson, including Ashcroft and Cache Creek.

According to Environment Canada, smoke from the Cantilever Bar wildfire burning near Lytton is expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility in the area.

The fire, which was discovered on Monday, is estimated at 460 hectares.

The two communities, as well as areas in the Fraser Canyon, are being impacted or will be impacted by smoke over the next 24-48 hours.

“As smoke levels increase, health risks increase,” the statement said. “Limit time outdoors. Consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.”

Ashcroft and Cache Creek are the only two communities in the South Thompson that are expected to be affected.
