Canada Border Services Agency recently encountered a different type of brew at the Toronto Pearson International Airport.
On March 4, 2018, two individuals travelling from Jamaica were intercepted by border officers who had suspicions about six containers declared as coffee in their luggage.
The officers' suspicions were confirmed after opening the containers. Instead of finding a freshly ground, black brew, the containers were full of white powder that tested positive for cocaine.
Officers seized about 11 kilograms of cocaine and turned the containers over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
To date, in 2018, CBSA officers in the Greater Toronto Area have made 25 seizures of suspected cocaine amounting to more than 145 kilograms.
However, one of the larger seizures happened this fall on the East Coast. On Nov. 11, 2017, the Halifax-based HMCS Moncton was deployed to the Caribbean Sea where it assisted the U.S. Coast Guard in seizing about 835 kilograms of cocaine and apprehended three suspected smugglers.
Earlier this winter, on Dec. 5, 2017 Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Nanaimo, contributed to the seizure of about 480 kilograms of cocaine in the eastern Pacific.
