Tim Hortons continued its global expansion on Friday.

The first-ever branch of the originally Canadian coffee chain opened up in Plaza Santo Domingo, Madrid.

Alejandro Sanchez was the first guest after lining up 17 hours before the store opened, but his commitment earned him a year's worth of free coffee.

He wasn’t the only one to win prizes on opening day, as the first 100 guests received free breakfast and the chance to win a trip for two to Canada.

Despite the chilly December weather, the most popular beverage of the day was Tim Hortons signature Iced Capp, while Timbits were unsurprisingly the most popular treat.

The three-storey restaurant spans nearly 300 square metres and serves more than just the classic Tim Hortons menu.

It also offers some Spain-specific menu items like freshly-pressed orange juice, tostada with tomato and ham gran reserve and even dulce de leche-filled donuts.

There are now more than 4,600 Tim Hortons around the world including locations in Canada, the U.S., Middle East, Philippines, Great Britain, Mexico — and now Spain.
