A cozy diner that has been a staple in Lake Country for nearly 35 years has announced that it will be permanently closing.
Owners Cheryl and Travis Forster, who took over the Wooden Nickel Cafe last summer, made the sad announcement over social media today.
“Unfortunately, we can’t afford to keep the lights on…literally,” a post to the restaurant’s Facebook page explained.
The post explained that the restaurant industry has taken a “huge hit with rising costs” and noted that they’ve had their own set of challenges since taking over the business.
“I am so sorry to the community as I know how much this place not only means to me, but to all of you as well,” the post continued.
There is no set date for the Wooden Nickel Cafe to close, but the Forsters said it could happen “any day” and urged people to come get their favourite menu items one last time before it happens.
The restaurant’s post was understandably met with comments from a lot of sad customers.
“Sad to see this business going,” wrote one woman. “It’s been part of the community for so many years.”
Another said the Wooden Nickel Cafe has been “such a staple in Lake Country - we are sad to see you go.”
“Thank you for the wonderful memories and your community spirit,” wrote another. “You will be greatly missed.”
The Wooden Nickel Cafe has been in its location just off Hwy 97 in Lake Country since 1990.
