RibFest gets underway in Kelowna today

Kelowna’s fourth annual RibFest begins today and promises another year of tasty, family-friendly philanthropy!

Organized by the Kelowna Sunrise Rotary Club and hailed as one of the best festival and food events in Kelowna — RibFest is a weekend-long festival filled with food, flavour and fun set to take place in City Park until Sunday.

“It is one of the bigger free events in Kelowna, we like to think it brings the community together to have fun and support some really important causes,” said Chris Murphy, a spokesperson for the event.

Attendees can look forward to some of the tastiest barbeque Canada has to offer from five wild and wonderful ribbers.

Hucklebellys, Gator BBQ, Boss Hog’s, Smoke & Bones along with Prairie Smoke & Spice will all be back to battle it out for the hearts of attendees and judges to win the coveted “Best Ribs” award.

If you have a vegetarian in your group or simply want to enjoy the festivities without munching on the fare, a number of food trucks will be onsite to suit everyone's needs including Kelly O’Bryans, Colossal Onion, Sunrise Rotary’s hot dog stand, Rollie's Roadhouse and many more.

In between meals, families can enjoy browsing the onsite vendors market in addition to a number of interactive activities in the Save-On-Foods family fun zone.

From a ring toss and giant Jenga all weekend long, to special activities on Saturday and Sunday including face-painting, bounce houses and traditional games with the Westbank First Nation — the event is a great spot to spend some quality time with loved ones.

As usual, rib lovers can look forward to a variety of live, local music with this year’s lineup hailed as one of the best for the festival! Headliners include Under the Rocks, Linus and Lost n’ Found in addition to more local faves such as Post-Modern Connection and Josh + Bex.

Dance along on the grass or tap your feet from the beverage gardens, no matter where you are in City Park you’ll have the chance to hear these wonderful musicians!

It just wouldn’t be RibFest without the art of giving back, over the last four years the festival has been able to donate over $100,000 to various organizations within the community.

Funds garnered through raffle tickets, the beverage gardens, the rotary hotdog stand and the generosity of attendees at the 2019 event will go toward the JoeAnna’s House campaign — helping to support its operation once the build is complete.

“We love to support this important cause and we are hoping to donate over $10,000 to it again this year,” added Murphy.

You will have plenty of time to join in on the philanthropic and delicious fun over the weekend as the event will run from noon until 10 pm for the first two days and from noon until 7 pm on Sunday.
