E-scooters to operate under the same rules as bikes in Kelowna

As of Monday, e-scooters will operate under the same traffic laws as bicycles in Kelowna.

That means the trendy vehicles are now allowed on city streets and bike lanes after previously being limited to pathways such as the waterfront promenade.

The move comes after the provincial government selected Kelowna as one of six pilot project cities in BC to test run having e-scooters on roadways.

“As an emerging mode of transportation worldwide, e-scooters have the potential to help deliver on many of our community and Council priorities,” said Matt Worona, New Mobility Specialist.

“Because they take up less space on our roads and release fewer emissions, e-scooters uniquely align with the City’s climate and traffic flow objectives.”

All e-scooter users are required to be over 16, wear a helmet and stay off sidewalks and highways.

However, a driver’s licence and insurance are not required.
