This kind of forecast wouldn’t even cause you to blink an eye in December, but it’s worthy of an Environment Canada weather alert in June.
With most people’s winter tires sitting in storage, a special weather statement has been issued about the possibility of snow on a pair of BC Interior mountain passes.
According to Environment Canada, up to four centimetres of snow could fall at the Pennask Summit on the Okanagan Connector (Hwy 97C) and the Kootenay Pass on the Crowsnest Highway (Hwy 3).
“An upper disturbance will pass over southern BC and could bring some snow to some high-elevation highway passes,” the alert reads.
“Snow levels are set to lower to around 1,700 metres overnight tonight and will linger till Wednesday.”
The majority of the snow accumulation for Hwy 97C isn’t expected until overnight Tuesday, but Hwy 3 will see it as early as Tuesday afternoon.
The alert adds that the weather conditions could affect visibility and travellers should be prepared for “quickly-changing and deteriorating” conditions on the road.
