VIDEO: Popular local coffee house chain plans it's return after COVID-19 pause

Kelowna's own Bean Scene coffee shops are planning to reopen, but they're taking a cautious approach.

"I don't blame people for wanting to go back to work," said owner Amy Lang, "but at the same time, everyone has to do it quite carefully."

"We are going to follow the CDC guidelines for when we're allowed to open within a few days I would say," added Lang, who spoke with KelownaNow outside the Bernard Avenue location.

"Our plan is to finish our renovation down here and then move on to opening our other coffee shops," she said.

Look for table service to resume first at the Landmark District location.

"That's where I think we'll focus on having seating allowed because we can really spread people out in that location," explained Lang.

Table service at the cozier Bernard Avenue space could come next, but it will be limited.

"I think you just kind of have to take your space into consideration and work from there," she said.

Just how many Kelowna eateries will be opening early next week remains a bit of a mystery even as we head into the long weekend.

"I don't know," said Lang, when we asked her to speculate. "I mean I think there's a lot of restaurants that are champing at the bit to get back at it because it's been quite a while."

She admits, the need for cash flow is part of the equation.

"Lots of restaurants are struggling financially, said Lang, "and they need to make those few extra dollars at the end of the month to make their rent this month."

For the Bean Scene, the plan is to take the slow brew approach.

"We'll do our best to keep everybody safe," concluded Lang. "Safe and comfortable really."
